Golden Globe Results

Well, the 2014 Golden Globe awards were handed out last night and I have to say, most of Experimental Nonsense's predictions were correct!  Now we missed a few, but no one is perfect.  The question that remains for the film winners is:  Will this win build momentum going into the Academy Awards?  As for the Television winners, they can hope for a bump in the ratings as a result of their victories. 

 

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were funny and promised a show lasting three hours.  They did exceptionally well.  Now, onto the awards…

 

FILM

 

Best Motion Picture, Drama

Prediction:  12 Years a Slave
Winner:  12 Years a Slave

This movie is now the clear front runner for the Oscar.  Actor and Actress were shut out, but this was a momentum builder for Steve McQueen's film.

 

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

Prediction:  Cate Blanchett

Winner:  Cate Blanchett

Not a surprise here.  She'll have her work cut out when it comes to Oscar, but this was deserved (according to critics).

 

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama

Prediction:  Matthew McConaughey

Winner:  Matthew McConaughey

A solid win for the esteemed bongo player.  This is a guy that is making the transition from movie star to actor.  The upcoming SAG Awards will be the barometer of his Oscar chances.

 

Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Prediction:  American Hustle

Winner:  American Hustle

With this movie's star power, this was not a surprise.  Once it's grouped with the "drama" films, it will be an uphill climb for Oscar.

 

We're 4 for 4 so far, we're on a roll…oh wait…

 

Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Prediction:  Meryl Streep

Winner:  Amy Adams

We were thinking seniority rules with this one.  Streep's performance was applauded, but Adams in American Hustle was the winner.  This is a good win for her.  Her campaign for the Oscar has officially started.  The studio will push her performance over the next month.  Watch for this…

 

Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy

Prediction: Bruce Dern

Winner:  Leonardo DiCaprio

From Hollywood accounts, Dern had started his campaign and schmoozing for this award weeks ago.  We missed this and Leo won.  With all the controversy surrounding "The Wolf of Wall Street", I'm not surprised they gave Leo the award.  Good win for him.  I think Dern's performance will play better with Oscar voters.

 

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

Prediction:  Jennifer Lawrence

Winner:  Jennifer Lawrence

The "It" girl strikes again.  That's two Globes in row for Katniss.  Not only is she a great actor, she's down to earth and I think that strikes a chord with fans and voters.  The campaign for her second Oscar will be turned up to 11 now.

 

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

Prediction:  Jared Leto

Winner:  Jared Leto

Again, not a surprise here and we nailed it.  I would not be surprised if Leto sweeps this category for the remainder of Awards season. 

 

Best Director – Motion Picture

Prediction:  Alfonso Cuaron

Winner:  Alfonso Cuaron

"Gravity" was a visual masterpiece.  This win will carry weight as the season rolls on.  We'll have to see how Oscar votes, but a solid win for the space epic and its director.

 

Best Animated Feature Film

Prediction:  Frozen

Winner:  Frozen

Disney Animation wins and "Frozen" is a bona fide hit.  Fans loved it, critics loved it, and it should win the Oscar as well.

 

In the film category, we hit 8 of 10.  Not too shabby.

 

TELEVISION

 

Best TV Series, Drama

Prediction:  Breaking Bad

Winner:  Breaking Bad

The last season was perfect.  The show gets rewarded with the Globe. 

 

Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama

Prediction:  Kerry Washington

Winner:  Robin Wright

I think this was the biggest surprise of the evening.  Newly engaged Wright outdueling the other female leads.  We did not see this coming.  Congrats, Robin Wright.

 

Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama

Prediction:  Bryan Cranston

Winner:  Bryan Cranston

Cranston was great on "Breaking Bad."  This was well-deserved.

 

Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy

Prediction:  Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Winner:  Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Nailed it.  This was the perfect case of the Globes going the new, hip, cool route.  This is a freshman show and Fox will continue to promote the heck out of this show.  We see a little bump in the ratings in the future.

 

Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy

Prediction:  Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Winner:  Amy Poehler

Don’t get us wrong, Poehler is deserving of this victory.  However, I do think it helped that she hosted last year and this year.  Regardless, we applaud this win for her underrated show.  And her acceptance was great.  Bono got a mouthful.  Hilarious.  Keep it up, Ms. Poehler.

 

Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy

Prediction:  Jim Parsons

Winner:  Andy Samberg

We went with the safe and sound pick, but the Globes went new and exciting.  A good win for the "SNL" vet. 

 

For the Television portion of the show, we went 3 for 6.  Acceptable in our mind. 

 

The grand total for the major awards was 11 for 16.  Hey, I'll take that.  We'll start checking flights to Vegas now.  The SAG Awards are presented this upcoming weekend so we'll see how the winners fare.  As for more predictions, Experimental Nonsense will have to debate whether to tarnish our pretty good score.  Stay tuned…
